Black Widow & Recluse Spiders
Spider bites are not common in the United States and on the rare occasion that they happen, they are usually harmless. There are only two commonly dangerous spiders in the United States and they are the Black Widow spider and the Brown Recluse spider.
The female Black Widow spider is the only one that bites, measures about one-half of an inch long, black and has a red hourglass on the underside of her abdomen. Although the venom from a black widow spider bite is poisonous it is not lethal.
The Brown Recluse spider is also about half an inch long or shorter. They have a violin-shaped marking beneath their midsection. Although both of these spiders are poisonous, they are not a dangerous threat. Both tend to be reclusive and stay away from people.
